144English英語で語ろうNo.6Do you know Dr. Ōmura, who got the Novel Prize? Of course, you do! Let’s read his speech!I’d like to talk about my philosophy. I believe that all the answers to our problems are in nature. I’ve claimed since the 1970s that there are unlimited resources in the world of microorganisms. Fifty years of studies proved that belief was right. I discovered many useful natural products such as Ivermectin. I’d like to search for new natural products which bring us health and benets, and for the next generation of researchers to do so as well. I’ve worked with biochemists, microbiologists and clinicians for 50 years. I keep one motto in mind: “ichigo ichie,” which is the motto of the Tea Ceremony. It means “treasure every encounter because it will never come again.” There are no second chances, so it is important to take chances when they come and to respect your co-workers and also your subjects, microorganisms in my case. I’m sure that this attitude led us to the breakthrough. I want to thank people who helped me on the way to this discovery.philosophy 哲学、人生観 claim 主張する unlimited resources 限りない資源microorganisms 微生物 prove 証明する natural products 天然有機化合物 Ivermectin イベルメクチンsearch for 探す benets 恩恵 generation 世代 researchers 研究者 biochemists 生化学者microbiologists 微生物学者 clinicians 臨床医学者 treasure 大切にする encounter 出会いrespect 尊敬する co-workers 同僚 subject (研究)主題 attitude 姿勢 breakthrough 大発見 discovery 発見注●自分の夢,自分の好きな言葉を英語でスピーチしよう。どんなことを信条として研究を続けてきたのかな。微生物の世界には何があると言っているのかな。A Message from Dr. Ōmura!
