「Jewelry and Design: The Why of Form」
2013.9.28-2014.1.13
Closed: Tuesdays, 12.26-1.1
Room : "Yamanashi Jewelry Today"
Creating jewelry requires many processes, including polishing and carving precious stones and working with precious metals. Yamanashi is exceptional in having both all those production process, and a jewelry distribution system as well, concentrated in one area. Here superb skills in polishing, carving, and precious metalworking stimulate creativity, inspired by the materials themselves. The quest for new designs rooted in materials and craftsmanship has produced dazzling examples of jewelry.
This exhibition presents fifty examples of Yamanashi jewelry, including work created for the museum’s opening, work by jewelry designers connected to Yamanashi, examples from the Koo-fu Collection, Yamanashi’s own jewelry brand, and work by Fukasawa Naoto, who, as the director of the Koo-Fu Collection, has played a critical role in its development. We hope that this opportunity to learn about what lies behind each beautiful piece of jewelry—the design and craft processes—will bring a deeper understanding of the allure of Yamanashi jewelry.
