The Yamanashi Jewelry Museum will celebrate its 10th anniversary in September 2023.
Guests who visit the museum can learn about jewelry, which is a very important local industry in Yamanashi Prefecture, as well as the supportive people, skillful techniques, history and many initiatives surrounding it.
Crystals used to be mined in the northern part of Yamanashi, around Mt. Kinpu. In the late Edo period (1603-1867), crystal polishing techniques really started taking off after they were brought in from Kyoto. Then, in the mid-Meiji period (1868-1912), crystal polishing was combined with precious metal craftsmanship (“kazari” in Japanese) to produce products with a high market value. Over the years, Yamanashi has continued to work hard to make a name for themselves as a jewelry epicenter, and today they boast one of the largest market shares for jewelry in Japan.
Of the various steps of the supply chain that Yamanashi covers as an industrial cluster—from raw material procurement to processing, distribution, and sales—their jewelry processing is particularly noteworthy. Precious metal processing, gemstone polishing, and crystal sculpting—these are just some of the many closely intertwined and exquisite techniques behind each piece of Yamanashi Jewelry.
Powerful yet graceful parures, dazzling tiaras,one-of-a-kind necklaces and rings made from stone. Each of these pieces werecarefully crafted in Yamanashi.While continuing to introduce excellent products tothe world, the prefecture is also working with local industries on new humanresource development, alongside the Yamanashi Jewelry Museum who is providingadditional support.
