There are two main types of gemstone cuts. One is the "faceted cut," in which the gemstone sparkles from the inside with a polyhedron of facets (polished surfaces), and the other is the cut that makes the most of the surface polish, color and volume of the stone without facets.
Faceted cuts include the round brilliant cut, which is mainly used for diamonds, as well as the emerald cut, marquise cut, pear-shaped cut, and so on. There are many other types of cuts without facets, such as the cabochon cut and engraving.
Cutting techniques and designs have developed over time to maximize the brilliance of gemstones and enhance their value.
Yamanashi, a jewelry producing region, also has gemstone polishing techniques that are indispensable for jewelry making.
In the past, Yamanashi produced high-quality quartz crystals from the Kinpusan area in the northern part of the prefecture, and in the late Edo period, polishing techniques were introduced from Kyoto, giving rise to the development of gemstone polishing and the foundation of the current jewelry industry.
Polishing techniques that began with crystal polishing eventually expanded to polishing all kinds of gemstones.
Today, in addition to standard cuts, craftsmen have invented original cuts, and various other cuts have been tried and tested in the pursuit of cuts that make gemstones look more beautiful.
This exhibition will feature representative gemstone cuts of jewelry to those cut with originality by Yamanashi craftsmen, we will focus on the rich expression of gemstones. Come take a peek into the world of brilliance created by a wide variety of gemstones.
