Yamanashi’s jewelry industry, a prominent local trade, is said to have originated with the production of high-quality crystals and the development of its processing technology.
Polishing techniques from Kyoto spread to Kofu in the late Edo period, where priests at Kanazakura Shrine in northern Kofu City acquired them. Over time, this led to the distinct specialization and development of crystal carving and gemstone polishing techniques.
Today, Yamanashi has grown into one of Japan’s leading jewelry producing areas, playing a central role in the industry from raw material procurement to processing, production, distribution, and sales.
This exhibition, in addition to showcasing the history of jewelry in Yamanashi, features crystal jewelry from the Meiji period to around the 1950s, drawn from the University of Yamanashi collection and the museum’s own holdings.
We hope you will discover the depth and interest of Yamanashi jewelry as you trace back through the ages.
